So my tank has an algae problem; it's not very close to light, and I do not overfeed at all. Anyway I've gotten use to it and I just scrub to maintain it, but I think it would be nice to have some snails help me out. Are mystery snails any good for this? If not, what? Thanks!

How big is the tank? Nerite snails would probably be your best bet since these snails eat solely on algae. I would not buy more than two for a tank at least 30g unless you allow the algae to flourish for them to eat. They prefer algae but will occasionally accept vegetables.

^^ I have a few mystery snails and the only thing they do for the glass is leave trails, and not of ate algae. Kinda nice looking and fun to watch though.

Hi, thanks for the response. The tank is 29 gallons and has one large goldfish which I worry might eat smaller snails. I do have a very abundant supply of algae, but I don't think I have ever seen nerite snails at any of my local stores. If I can't find any nerites, what other options do i have?

Try contacting Mgamer2000 or msjinkzd in AC. Mg lives in Cali last I checked so you can try him.

One or two nerites only.

Have you checked your nitrAtes? How often do you change the water in your tank? I'd try to find the cause of the algae, instead of just adding more to your bioload. Goldfish are VERY messy and sensitive to high nitrAtes, so it would be good to be certain those are under control first :)

I had a brown diatom algae problwm in my tank, and got some nerites which really helped. I also added some apple snails, but they seem most concerned with fish food.

The best snail i added were the little 'pest' ramshorns you see as hitchhikers in planted tanks at lfs's.

Tjy eat all kinds of algae, left over food, and reproduce prolifically, so can be used as food for loaches, puffers, etc.... they also dont damage plants.
