I have a weird yellowish brown algae growing in my recently set up 180 predator tank. It is growing on the sand and all the live rock. I have had a reef tank for some time now and have never seen this before. Does anyone know what it is or how to get rid of it?

diatoms

$50 says diatoms

what's your circualtion, nitrate and phosphate levels?

$100 says diatoms.

sounds like a form of diatom algae I would add more flow and siphon detritus and debris off the live rock crevices occasionally when you do a water change and of course more flow will help post a pic of the algae as well if possible

I know the Nitrates are 0. I am getting a Phosphate test kit today. I thought I had good circulation.... over 2000 Gallons an hour in a 180. I will pick-up an extra powerhead today for the bottom of the tank. Most of my circulation is in the upper half of the tank. I will post a picture this evening.

sometimes you get a dead zone that contributes to that mystery algae I like having a power head or two angles from the bottom of tank upwards to keep food and detritus suspended for the filters to pull it out
