Hey guys,

First off, Im a new member and I am glad I stumbled across this site!! I have read many posts and have gained answers to many questions I had. Anyways, I bought my lungfish about 2 weeks ago. "Chompers" is doing extremely well and sure can put down some food:) I originally thought he was an african lungfish, but after seeing some pics I can see some South American in him. Can you guys help me identify my species? Also, any guess as to how old he may be, he measures 18" long from nose to tail tip. All help is much appreciated.:D

I would guess that it's Protopterus annectens (African). Either way, it really doesn't look SA. It has external gills (SA lose those pretty early), and much longer fins/limbs than my SA does.

Also, welcome to MFK!

yes, Protopterus annectens is what this specimen would be, nice looking fish too. at 18" it's hard to say exactly how old the fish is, but it is probably around 2-3 years in age...maybe a bit more...the size the fish reaches when it comes into your possession depends on the conditions in which it was kept by the owner in most cases. it's safe to say the fish is older than 1 year, but other than that all we have are educated guesses.

since it is an African lungfish, keep in mind they will not get along with tankmates and are best kept alone. they may not attack at first, but they eventually do attack randomly and often fatally--

Ya, I got rid of all my fish on time, except for the poor clown loach and brochis cats :( He is now my only fish besides a couple feeders, which wont last too long. Thanks for the ID!! He is in great shape and a very welcomed addition to the family.
