I went out "turtle hunting" with my 10 yr old son and caught a few little guys I've never seen before. I have been catching turtles in this lake for over 30 years and have never caught any like this before. What are they ???? In the last 10 years or so I have been catching some GIANT turtles I believe are red bellied sliders. Some are almost 2 feet long :WHOA: It used to be painted turtles were the only kinds, now there are a bunch of others. I also saw some red eared sliders hanging around. I didnt think they could winter over in NJ.

Thanks.....

so cute the lil redbellies

Thanks for sharing, great pics! I envy you being able to walk outside and see such cool animals!

Those little guys are red bellies ???? They lose the markings as they get older ??? Pretty cool........Learn something new every day...........almost :D

Thanks much.......

Wonder if those are the northern redbellies, there is a colony of them in Mass., Plymouth I think. I can't imagine the southern ones could winter over that far north. Very cool either way.

They are native. The young's plastron looks like a Western Painted Turtles but gradually turns all dark red. I have heard that in New Jersey there are quite a few Pseudemys rubriventris that are melanistic, but still have a red plastron. The last turtle is probably a female, which have been known to grow over 16 inches in length. Awesome find! They are native south of where I live, but I've never caught one.
