This is bugging me so I have to ask, I'm sure others are curious as well. Can anyone clear up how these two fish share the dotted line "parrot" name sake? I'm talking: Hoplarchus psittacus "true parrot" :naughty: (vs) Blood parrot :yuck:

ps - please do not get this thread derailed and locked up. It's a legitimate question.. Thanks in advance.

Adult psittacus have faces that look very much parrot like. Hense the common name. Blood parrots are named as such because they are red and have screwed up mouths. It's just a coincidence that they have similiar common names.

Thanks for the response jgentry. I have never thought the adult pisttacus faces to be parrot like. I'm going to have to dig up some more adult pics. PB do look like they have a beak, that makes sense thanks.

psittacus literally means parrot in Latin, so thats how true parrots got their name. Don't know about the blood parrots

Thank you Colin your correct, I found the below interesting as well..(credit below via CRC link)

"Fishermen of Manaus (Brazil) refer to the species as papagai (Portuguese for "parrot") due to its striking coloration. The specific nomen "psittacus" reflects this common usage; parrots are members of the family Psitticidae." source > http://www.cichlidae.com/article.php?id=67

So now to find how the bloody version got it's name.

I believe it was the high, sharply curved forehead of the adult parrots that triggered the common name ... the angle of the curve is very similiar to the angle of the curve on a parrot beak.
