Im very interested in owning a pair can you guys share your experiences about the NASTY!

I've got a breeding pair and about 300 fry in my fishroom right now. The male has a nice lil hump. Blue Demp has a gorgeous pair. Duanes is extremely knowledgeable on them, as is Freshwaterpredators and TheFishGuy. Isde02 has a pair that just started breeding as well.

As for the fish themselves, they have a stigma of being bloat prone. I haven't had to deal with this issue, and my pair has a batch of fry every three weeks or so. The male is like a puppy, begging for food. He can distinguish between my wife, my son, and me. From raising them up from a small size, watching the breeding behavior, and getting tons of fry- I've been ecstatic. They are by far my favorite fish species that I've kept.

They are very sensitive to bloat while young, 1/2" to approx. 4". I believe it is stress, and that could be from being kept in a community. I went through 20 fry to get a female, and ended up buying an adult male. They spawned many times.
They are also very sensitive to cool, and like temps in the 80s. After a heater failure they both got ich and the female died.

Lots of water changes, and a stress free tank would be the ticket.

so at what size would you say they become hardy and less prone to ich?

Haits seem to be in the clear from bloat around 4.5-5" and up, that doesnt mean they can't bloat past that but it's unlikely. And these fish do best in a pair tank or solo not in a community unless they are the most dominant. And no fish is prone to ick, just keep your temps above 80 and keep salt on hand and you won't have to worry about ick unless you have just introduced a new fish to the tank without quarentining first

Do you recon they'll fight with the most dominant one in the tank if I do put it in a community tank?

Yes they will fight and you will generally get two results; they either win and become dominant or they loose and become sub-dom and will stress about it and prolly die from it. To me in my experience with them they have some sort self-esteem disorder lol meaning if their not top dog they get stressed and die, the stress lowers their immune system and the bacteria takes over in their stomach which is called hexamita and that is what gives them bloat. Its worth a try but its not what I would do... I've spent enough money on them and don't like fish dying on me
