Has anyone ever kept a black nasty successfully in a big brute cichlid community? My lfs store has a handful and I've always wanted to add one to my collection. I'm aware of the bloat issue, as well as higher temps, and a lesser protein diet.

duanes duanes can fill you in, but in the wild they have no cichlid competitors. But since you know about the bloat issue, why even put them in a community to stress them out?

I worked with them for around 5 years, and I don't know about anyone else.
But I haven't had success in a community setting.
They are the only endemic species in their habitat, so a community setting with numerous other cichlids, is foreign to them.
I find if they cannot kill all other cichlids in the tank (except a compatible mate) , they bloat up and die.
I kept 1 pair only, per 6 ft tank.
In the shot above, the male is about 15", the female almost 12".

Well I honestly thought the bloat issue had something to do with protein in their food combined with a temperature not high enough to help process it. I tried to do as much research on this fish as possible. But yes it sounds like stress would be a contributing factor to bloat, so I believe I'm going to pass. If I had a spare 6-ft tank it would be all his lol.

Gorgeous fish man. If I had another 6 footer I'd give them a try.

I believe aquarium temps considered normal can cause enough stress for them to bloat.
The 1st group I bought (a dozen) all bloated, probably because the tank was maintantained at only 78"F.
I later read an article called Oh Island in the Sun, The Dominican Repulic (1994) by Alf Stalsberg, collected them, in temps in the upper 80s and 90s" F.
For my 2nd group, I raised the temp to high 80s and had better success, until at about 3-4" they started killing each other, in a 6 ft tank.
I also did feed a diet high in Spirulina, and comparatively low in protein.

My experience with the nasties not as great as duanes But if tank raised diet, temps not so much a big deal but high traffic areas stress them, tank mates, change of food, moving tanks. biggest killer of nasties (EXCEPT OTHER NASTIES)
