Anyone ever heard of this or can ID what the "mento" is, if the pic even comes up?
It is listed as a Nandopsis mento with all the other Parachromis, which are also under the genus Nandopsis (older book).
Thanks

I've never seen or heard of it but it's a wicked looking fish.

I'm posting just the mento so everyone can view it easier and bigger.

that is one mean looking fish!
but on the bottom of the page its got the motaguense is that a naturally occuring fish or is that a hybrid looks like a red terror/jag?
can some one please answer that for me in from australia an ive been in the lfs asking this same question an they havnt even heard about them?

wow! that fish is sick! reminiscent of the african riverene buffalo head cichlids, only with chompers!

notice the origin suspect on the pic you posted?

fishbase search yielded nothing valid or invalid. google search got this though
http://www.itis.gov/servlet/SingleRpt/SingleRpt?search_topic=TSN&search_value=648776
says its invalid or a hybrid.

considering it only has a sketch, probably was just reported or something?

crazy looking fish

Motaguense is a naturally occuring cichlid now classified under the Parachromis genus. Ask them for a Parachromis Motaguense and see if any of their suppliers can get one for you.

It doesn't look like a sketch, it looks like a actual dead fish.

Parachromis motaguense is a valid cichlid.
There is a hybrid of managuense and festae, I cant think of what they call it-other than a hybrid

Nandopsis mento (Heros mento) is considered to be a synonym of exCichlasoma istlanum.

When CA are scared and out of the water, for some time, they often will turn black/brown. This fish is definately out of the water, and may not even be alive(?). So coloration and markings are of no help in identifying what it really is. It does have the right body shape for an istlanum. And the large teeth ----- if the fish is making it's living as a piscivore they might develope larger then what is usually seen in captivity.
