I saw a photograph of a Cuban cichlid several years back that made a very strong impression on me. I had seen cubans before but the specimen in the photo had an extremely high white contrast. I'm sure many have observed this trait and can even guess which photo I'm referring to.
Eager to keep a specimen like this for myself I went out and acquired a trio from the best source that I could find. I grew these fish out to approximately 7-8" but never got the specimen that I was looking for. These fish were mostly black with a purple irridescent hue. No genuine white.
I eventually sold the trio. Thinking that perhaps it would be that special fish in the brood that would attain the desired color, I bought another pair from a vendor who let me come and pick my fish out of his tank. Surely by being able to pick the best out of dozens, I'd get what I was looking for, right? Well, no. Turns out that the fish originated from the same breeder as the ones I had before and would all be a darker, more blotchy variant and not the high-white, "mosaic" looking fish that I was in search of.
Totally disenchanted by the species, I gave up and vowed that I would never........ well, it wasn't really that serious, but it was definitely a bummer.
Then, several months later the same vendor sent me a photo of a fish in his possession that caught my attention once again. This fish wasn't as mature as the one in the original photo but the high-white color pattern was remarkable and like no Cuban that I had ever seen in person. As per "the vow", I passed on the fish.
During my subsequent visits over the next several months I saw more and more of these fish ranging from 1.5" to 7" and every male over 3" was high-white.
So, with my interest in Nandopsis tetracanthus resurrected I broke down and acquired for myself (for the third time) some cubans.
So, what gives?
New blood in the hobby perhaps?

Whatever it is, I am very happy to own what I consider to be a stunning example of this species and I think its safe to say that a new variant has emerged. Let's preserve it!.
Any thoughts on or pictures of the species are welcome.
Thanks mfk'ers!

I have a young male that looks exactly like your's.

I know exactly what you mean with the "white". It is what gives them that special look ( something you only find in Cubans and Haitians )

Yeah, I agree but I have never seen cubans like the ones currently available from various vendors in the states. If you go back a year or two and look at the majority of the adult cubans that people, including myself, were keeping you'll see a difference.

yeah my male use to look liek that until he got older then he turned black and white.. i have cubans that have a blue tent to them, and some have a really thick hue of blue and i have a male that looks exactly like that right now. ill try to see if i can get this video on.

I got mine from Ira (The Wishlist) and I've seen photos of similar looking fish from Gage (Cichlid Connection), MTN Pike (americancichlids.net) and, most recently, Jeff Rapps (TUIC). The point is, they're everywhere and imo they're several notches above most cubans that I've seen in the hobby over the past several years. The pair that I have are a riverine race from a place with a name that I can neither spell nor pronounce: Viajaca Criolla (I had to look it up). I believe the rest of the 'high-white' cubans being sold are of the same origin but I may be wrong. As I wrote in my initial post, I think its great that these gorgeous fish are here.!:headbang2 I was just curious as to whether anyone else has noticed the difference that I see in these fish or has a string of bad luck with this species made me partial? I would also love to see some Cuban pics.:)

Here's the small one I got a couple of weeks ago

Here's another one, of the darker variant ( I tend to believe, as others do, that it is a Cuban....)

Thanks Miguel! Those are excellent examples of what I'm referring to. Every male Cuban that I've ever owned has looked like the second picture you posted or darker. You're new acquisition, on the other hand, is perfect. If you don't mind me asking, how did you come by your new Cuban?
Now comes the question: are these fish the same despite the obvious differences? Is the darker morph the result of excessive captive breeding or do the represent what was once a different geographical variant from the ones we've seen recently?

I knew exactly what you meant with the "white", as said...

I got the white guy from a small time dealer that does some imports every now and then. I think it might have come from Germany or Holland.

The dark one I picked up from a batch of baby Jaguars; it was sold as a Jaguar but I always had my doubts.....
