got 4x 3''nandus nandus today, just wondering what to expect as far as growth rate, from what i've read sounds like its gonna be slow. also would like to know how hard it is to get these guys on frozen. they are currently residing in a 55gal growout, temps are 79-81f and they get a 4-8 gal water change daily Ph is 7.2- 7.5

Cheer,
Jordan

Extermely slow growers, peaceful with anything that won't fit in it's enormous Perch mouth. They can live in both fresh and brackish water. They change their color and patterns to match rocks and leaves, your basic ambush predator. In the wild they can get as large as 8" however it may very well take them 10 years to get that large.
Largest one I've owned /seen - a not so robust 5". Shouldn't have any real need to "grow them out" in 55 gal they don't require large amounts of space. Being a not so active fish, they can go long periods of time between meals. Odds are they will not except non- live foods so be prepared for that possiblity. They are a very good beginner ambush predator - very low maintence.

I agree with Otherone and I've tried them before as I like their look but they are a very boring fish. The ones that I had would sit in one spot for hours before moving an inch.

mine have eaten a small school of white clouds, and they seem interested in some of the frozen food (ie;bloodworm, mysis shrimp) i throw in for everyone else. gonna try some meal worms tonight. i would like to feed them crickets but i don't like the idea of them climbing outta the tank and ending up everywhere as i have plant roots hanging in the tank

I had a 5" + Nandus nandus which unfortunately jumped out of the tank recently. It fed on frozen fish, prawn and it happily took freeze dried krill. Didn't eat for the first week or two but I just stayed calm and waited. I never, ever offer feeders but this isn't a popular method of feeding in the UK on the whole.

Growth rate? Could barely notice any growth if any. Which part of BC are you in if you don't mind me asking?
