Instead of a refugium with aquatic plants, using plants which have only their roots and stems submerged.
My dad did this in our pond.Only its in the pond itself and not somewhere where the water constanly flows through it.

by the way can someone id these plants. In my language is called "varkoor"
which translates to pigs ear.

I know folks who have set up bog plant filters, and I intend to do the same at some point. Emergent plants may be more efficient nitrogen removers, because they are not limited by the low availability of CO2 and O2 in the water.

Your plant appears to be a species of Zantedeschia. In the US they are called calla lilies.

This is way beyond my experience level, but its a great idea. Nice design, too! I know what plants I would put in there...psssssss..cough...cough..pass it
