I have a 1.5G Molly fry growout tank that came with a Whisper 3i air-powered filter. That thing sux. I picked up a mini-filter made by Tom's Aquarium. It looks like a hi-quality unit & the flow is adjustable. Plus, it came with a spraybar attachment & diffuser, which is cool. Kinda pricey at $15.99, but I hope it works well.

Anybody ever use this little guy before?

A simple sponge filter should be just fine for that... Hard to beat for biofiltration.

I hear about these sponge filters on the forum all the time, but the only thing I've found with that name looks like a powerhead. That cant be what you're talking about, right? What exactly should a sponge filter look like?

Jake don't be a wuss get an AC110 on that thing and call it a day...

J/k man. On a more serious note that filter looks pretty legit.

Yeah...I wish I had room for an AC HOB, but its one of those "Water Wonders" tanks with the nice clear lid & I dont want to cut a big notch out of the lid. This tank has really been a pain to get cycled, though! Its been running for 3 weeks & I'm still spiking Nitrite. I moved a sponge and some gravel over from my big tank & I've been doing 50% WC's on it just to keep the nitrite below 1.5 ppm, which I still think is too high. Thank to Prime, everyone is still alive, though. I thought the flow was the problem, but has anybody else had issues cycling tiny tanks?

My new Tom Mini-Filter is actually a really nice unit so far. I like the way its built (all modular) & the spray bar seems to make a big difference in the oxygenation. It says it can handle a 5G tank (65GPH), but I'm only running 1.5G. It looks like something the Japanese would build for a small tank with some kind of $500+ fish. It feels like its very hi-quality & has good flow & filter cartridges are actually pretty cheap @ 4.99 for a 3-pack. Again, I've never seen a filter this small that comes with a spraybar. So far I highly recommend it.

Sponge filters are usually air powered, and they're very effective.
They consist of a cylindrical sponge, usually with a lift tube coming out the top, and an air pump.

This little f*&^%r rocks! I was messing with it last night & found that the spray bar even rotates to adjust the jet angle! This wouldnt really be a big deal on a real spraybar, but on a $15 jobbie I think its worth noting. This thing is built to Fluval/Eheim quality, just nano-size!
