Ok well, basically my mum went out and bought a betta to keep in a bowl -_- not happening, no filter, no heater, doesn't sit right with me... so in the morning, i'm going out to be a small tank probably about 5-10 gallons, and i'm intending to do a small planted tank, with Dwarfs Hairgrass in the foreground, and A large but still small plant in the background.
basically budgeted to 100 AUD for the whole lot, maybe 120 AUD depending on the difference.

Anyone able to give me any ideas or help for how to lay it out? and where i could find a tiny heater.

Elite make a decent compact heater: http://www.aquariumproducts.com.au/catalogue_products.php?prodID=3526&catID=7
Comes in 25 and 50 watt, both the same physical size as far as I can tell, about 15-16cm long and quite slim compared to regular glass heaters. I have the 50 watt in my 8 litre cherry shrimp tank. I've seen the 25 and 50 watt Elite mini heaters in stores for $28-38.

Since you're in Australia you may be able to find AquaOne equipment. If you can find one, these are pretty good value: http://www.aquariumproductswholesale.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=21
Comes in three sizes, 14, 21 and 28 litre. That covers the tank and filter at least. I bought one for my nieces and nephew last christmas, it's still going strong.

For a light, I'd look out for one of these: http://www.shopjebo.com/19/small_aquarium_lights_supply.aspx
I see them in stores for $35-45. You'd want the 13 watt light, it's probably not going to illuminate a whole 20 litre/5 gallon tank but you'll be able to grow plants well in at least half of it. I have one over my 8 litre shrimp tank and the plants are doing extremely well.

Shop around and you might be able to come in under budget.

dude ur in perth isnt it hot enough down there! lolz

in summer i can turn heaters off, for maybe a week, our house stays cold no matter how hot it is outside, water temps without heating stay around the 15-16 celsius mark, and besides, my major issue was no filter.

got it all set up now, 5 gallon with under gravel filter, never used one before, but i figure give it a shot, water temps been raised to 22 celsius, and the betta is now building a bubble nest.
and i made my mum look at a few information sites for her fish, and has turned around and said she now understands why i spend the money on my fish and make sure everythings perfect for them :)

in comparison from yesterday to today, the betta is alot happier, and so much brighter in colour
