I am starting my 1.5 gallon nano reef today. I am thinking of using current usa LEDs. I have crushed coral and 2lbs of mature live rock and a astrea snail. I am also running a tetra pf10 with carbon insert. any other recommendations on media. Anyone have a nano reef here.

i have a 2.5

the heater in the filter trick is what i do as well

it's an aquaclear 20 though so it's a little easier, i just run the foam, no carbon
 
why waste your time with such a small tank with saltwater they crash so easy if your not experienced in saltwater. I think your going the right course by asking question's but just remember if you pee in a cup it dirty's faster then peeing in a tub.

i dont like crushed coral its a pain to vacuum, you will have to vacuum if your feeding anything in the tank. also just so you know sps corals dont do well under led fixtures sometimes.
 
I am just focusing on turning my 36gallon into a reef. I have a 175watt metal halide for it. My question is do you think I can get away with no protein skimmer for a while? Is there a DIY protein skimmer that will work temporarily. I just have one lionfish in there right now with about 30lbs of live rock, an AC70 and the tetra pf10. I also have a 20 gallon intank filter i could add. What do you think I should get besides a protein skimmer to get good water quality. The system is 3 yrs old now and i have never had a skimmer.
