We just got a 29gal nano tank for a gift and want to try a mini reef tank. I have keept FW Tanks for years and currently have a 150gl Thriving Freshwater Tank. This nano has built it mechanical filtration and comes with some Higher powered lights for corrals. I understant the basic setups but I really need some help and some Ideas on how to incorporate a refugium, possibly an hang on? If anyone has ever kept nano cubes before with Reef set ups, PLEASE help me out with some do's and don'ts. Any info will greatly be appreciated! Thanks in advance guys. MFK FOR LIFE!!!

Do: Use plenty of live rock, and let the tank run for awhile. Drip all SW fish and invertebrates, to get them used to your water. Do not overstock. If you can add one, a protein skimmer will make your life easier. Be sure to feed a variety of foods. Add fish slowly. Most recommend waiting a few weeks with the tank running before adding livestock. Resaerch, research, research. Without the help of many members here, I probably would not be successful.

I would go for a hang on the back fuge you can get little clip on lights for the algae etc. I would use live rock rubble and cheatomorpha as it is far less likely to go sexual and foul your tank than calupera.

It sounds to me like you are planning a mini reef or a mixed reef ? I would add what fish you were planning on keeping first as you'll want some practice keeping your params in line before you go laying out your $ on corals that you probably wouldn't have a lot of success with at first. I would also start out with lps species or softies until you get some experience.

you might want to check for state restrictions for marine algae..fuge is easy on that i did a few you need to place a baffle inside the fiter and the back of the tank should be coated just cut a spot and add your light to the back...i have done this the oldest one is 6mo runing great..just use a little mag float to clean light hole

I have read where a protein skimmer removes too much of the nutrients that are need for corral growth or just to sustain them for that matter. How do you get around this? Also, what is a good way to prevent unwanted flora and fauna blooms? I don't plan on setting up until march so I have plenty of time to do some more research. Anybody know a good place on line to get small hang on refugiums?

Thank all of you for your help so far!!
