Hi all, I recently got 2 convicts. The female is 3 inches and the male is 2-2.5 inches. But for some reason the female keeps chasing him into a flowerpot. They were just introduced yesterday from to different tanks at the lfs. Is it possible that they are just getting used to each other? She is'nt biting him she is just chasing and mouthing him whenever he come out of his pot. Should I just let them be for now? Is it normal for the female to chase the male sometimes?

Thanks

the male convict is the one that usually does that, but females sometimes do that too. I wouldn't worry about it unless the female starts to hurt the male.

ok:) Thanks

I've seen females do this especially if they are bigger in size than the male they're with. Watch them closely-- in my case, the female pecked the male's eyes out and I saw it too late.

Ok:) Thanks, is it possible for them to still breed?

I've had female convicts do the same thing to smaller males. The females were ready to breed and they tested the small males for possible mates. The males that weren't strong enough were beat up pretty badly. But the males that survived the females' advances grew larger and bred many, many, many times. Just watch out for the male that you have. An aggressive female bent on mating will kill him.

You need to watch them very carefully. It is pretty common for female convicts to be just as aggressive as males. If she is pushing him around now, you will really need to watch her if they breed.

I can tell you this from my personal experience, if she excepts him as a mate(which she probably will as they are convicts) About the time that the fry start to be free swimmers and she can no longer keep them confined to the area she wants them in she will most likely take her aggression out on her mate. You may want to have another tank or a divider ready so you can separate them until the fry are ready to be removed.

i think shes just tryin to get him to breed with her ;P
