ok so i went over to my friends place cuz i was bored and he was cleaning his tank.. his yearly clean.. he already had his fish in big bucket and was scrubbing his tank in the tub.. he asked me to clean his filter.. he has a AquaClear filter.. omg it the pipe at the water comes up from.. looks like brown slim.. i got that clean, washed the sponge and carbon bag, then i rinsed out the main part and in the pic thats what i found.. im not sure what hes doing wrong but i think its over feeding.... thats what i told him anyway

bump... i have that same stuff too... anyone know what it is?

It's just build up from the filter, I'm pretty sure it's just brown algae. But did you guys completely clean out the filters and bio-media???

the only thing i didnt clean was the bio media.. so if i get him to clean it, it should be fine. anyway to prevent it from happening again? like clean it more often or something?

thanks for the reply Mr. T.. i mean BODYDUB

sure thats not BB
i get that build up of brown gunk on the intake pipes of the filter
i clean it off cause i dont like the look but its BB
BB will grow everywere not just the media

I get that stuff all the time in my filters. Its on my planted tank which gets 50% weekly water changes and on my GF's goldfish tank which gets bi-weekly water changes so I think its normal for all tanks. I'd just clean the filter a bit more often and it wont build up so much.

Its probably just biofilm from all the accumulated food, poo and algae over such long time period. Don't "clean" the bio media, just kinda rinse it off a little with tank water or tank temp dechlorinated water to get the debris off.
