Does anyone know of anything native that would be a good burrower for sand? It could be fish, inverts or anything. I just am looking for something that will occasionally stir up my substrate.

native to where?

Most catostomids (suckers) are substrate rooters and will stir up your sand. They don't come in small, though. Why do you want a sand stirrer?

I prefer a deeper sand bed and need something to stir it so it wont accumulate gas pockets

Don't worry about gas pockets. I have tanks with substrates up to 10" deep, never stirred, and I don't have H2S production. You'll get CO2, but that doesn't hurt anything.

A little about the science behind H2S: sulfide gas is produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria. These bacteria feed largely on dead plant matter (especially cellulose, AKA fiber) and "breathe" sulfate (SO4--). In order for these bacteria to establish themselves, they have to have not only an anoxic substrate, but also lots of sulfate in the water. If you do regular water changes (and your source water does not have abnormally high sulfate levels) you will not have enough sulfate in the water for significant H2S production to occur.

Thats good to know I always thought that you just need anoxic conditions to start the process, thanks.

my crawdad loves to move gravel and digg holes in my tank, maybe a crawdad would be a good choice

I thought about them but they can be aggressive sometimes towards the fish which I'm looking to avoid

Kuli loaches sometimes burrow in sand when scared.
