What is the best way to get natives to show their best colors? Substrate, feeding, aquascape, etc.? I've noticed some people have beautifully colored fish and others have bland ones.

The best way is to have great quality fish, water, and food. Dark background/subtrate can also help. But good water and food will do wonders

Mine tend to have the best color at feeding time. But they all change color several times a day. My bluegill for example can go from being almost completely white to almost black within 30mins.

I dont know about all natives but for my sunfish I would breed and feed mine scuds, and freeze dried bloodworms several times a week to supplement there pellets and that really seemed to make them healthier and brought there colors out

To all of you: thank you. Great suggestions as usual. Once I get my tank fully scaped and stocked, I'll show it off.

Feeding and lowest stress possible. My Redfin goes whit when he is scared but when he is happy his colors are amazing. He also really colors up when hunting live feeders.
