Hi,

I have a 20 long (30x12x12) that has a sand substrate, some rocks, and plants. Looking for an interesting native. Either can be a solo fish or a community of fish. Was thinking of a dollar sunfish, or maybe a community of darters or madtom cats, or perhaps mudminnows. I dunno, throw out some idea. Thanks.

Well I got another tank with least killifish and bluespotted sunfish. So I already got sort of a community tank. Was looking for something more interactive and maybe bigger. Or just something a little different.

Sculpin or Mudminnow

Sculpin and mudminnows is what I'm doing ATM in a 20 tall, very quiet tank though, not much activity at all outside of feeding. When I have access to them my next tank will be a heavily planted 20-35 with pirate perch, black banded sunfish and tadpole madtoms - that's probably what I'd recommend for you if you want a planted tank.

Darters are probably my favourite fish to watch in groups, the level of interaction and interesting behaviour is unreal. The larger species like black sided darters and large rainbows are quite predatory as well, my black sided darters can take rosies quite easily and the rainbows can take small guppies and will chase down roses with the black sided darters and kill them/pick out the eyes. A few darters and smaller topminnows would be a neat tank as well.

Well my main requirement is that the fish be active. The tank I have with bluespotted sunfish they are quite shy. But the killifish in the tank are active. That was the reason I mentioned goldfish cause they are active, goofy, pretty smart, and not really that afraid of you. Do you see any predatory action with your mudminnow/sculpin combo? Have your mudminnows bred? My least killifish breed all the time but I think the bluespotted sunfish eat the babies cause as soon as the lights go out I hear strikes at the surface of the water. I was looking at some pirate perch on this website but the fact they need live food and are also not very active turned me off.

I like those suggestions. I will see if I can find them. I was also thinking about a fancy goldfish. One that stays 6 inch or under.

Goldfish in a 20 sucks I have one in my20 because my pond isn't built yet he's about 5 inches they are actually really nasty fish poop wise! So gross haha
