Was out netting tonight and came across this guy. He's about 3" long and I don't really have any ideas as to what he is. Anyone know? Caught him in a lake in NE Ohio.

Thanks for providing pics instead of making us guess.

Good call! Thanks man! I can't believe i've never seen one of these before. From what i've read they seem to be pretty common.

cool find!

Thanks! Ive been doing some reading about them and they are pretty cool! They are actually related to the pike and can breath atmospheric air like a bowfin or gar...cool!

I have him in my small native tank on my desk at work! :headbang2

Nice catch, sounds like an awesome fish. How big do you expect it to get?

From what i've read they can grow 2-7 inches, but usually on the smaller side of that range.

Those guys are pretty cool. they are really tolerant of drought and can breath atmospheric O2 like you said. Near Pymatuming Reservoir on the PA, OH border they are all over the place, because of the abundnce of marshes in that area. They usually dont get more then 3 or 4 inches. They are usually in the same areas as the brook stickleback which is another cool fish thats small and easy to take care of

Thanks for the added info! I'm going to try going out some night this week to catch a few more. Has anyone ever bred them before? That would be interesting.

I have never breed them but I'm pretty sure a fellow member of the Erie Aquarium Society has, but they like the shallow pools filled with lots of vegetation, when I caught the YOY while doing research at Pymatuming they were in 2 or three inches of water with a thick leaf littler covering the bottom. My guess sponge filter on one end and a bunch of plants on the next keep them roomw temp and feed some live food and I bet they will spawn.
