unfortunatley no picture, but im in new jersey and caught 3 small brown catfish in random net scoops at a lake near my house. im thinking brown bullhead but does anyone know what might be in this area fitting the description, and on top of that breeding this time of year? brown bullhead maybe?

I am not aware that they are any bullheads in NJ. The species list only has channel cat, flathead, blue cat, and white cat. There might be introduced populations of bullheads, but most brown bullheads aren't actually brown.

If they are long-ish and slender, you might have caught some madtoms. If they aren't then chances are, you have flatheads (which are brown)

yes very long and slender. i looked it up and i found that they are in fact madtoms. any idea how large these things get?

You do want to ID it as a couple NJ species are on the endangered list

If you tell us the watershed (or exact water body) we can produce a list of likely suspects.

If you produce a photo, we will tell you what species it is.

smaller then that. I have one. hides ALL the time...

'The life span in the wild is three to four years. Two to three year old fish average 2 to 2.25 inches long (50 to 56 mm). The maximum length is about 4.5 inches (114 mm).'

I feel it important to note that there are well over a dozen species of madtoms and while most are small they do come in range of sizes.

Acipenser brevirostrum (shortnose sturgeon) is the only endangered fish species in NJ.
