I have been kicking the idea around of getting a reptile of some sort and got me thinking is it against the law to keep native species? I live in the country and see all sorts of tree frogs, snakes, and lizards thought maybe it might be rewarding to collect and keep something. has anyone done this if it is not against the law? thanks.

I had a five lined skink when I was younger, very rewarding experience. I also had a spotted salamander that lived for a long time. I'd check to local laws and see what's endangered and not.

here in wi you can collect a few of each species if you have a fishing liscense. dont know if its the same for you in il though. just make sure you dont go catch something thats protected though. you should look up your local dnr page and see.

The law varies from state to state. Here in Alabama, eastern box turtles are protected by law, but in MS and GA, they're not. Likewise, GA has a law where its illegal to keep native species of herps.

rough green snakes are native around me. very cool snakes i must say. try a timber rattle snake, yet you might die if it bites you. lol

haha I think I will pass on the rattle snake when I lived in Arizona I had a friend with one it was cool but not for me. I have seen the green snakes they are cool there was a dead one on the road I live on one time thats the only reason I know what it is.
