Hello, anyone have any suggestions on hardy native cold water plants and where to buy them? I have a LMB in a 58 gal breeder tank, and am looking to give him some more cover as he sometimes get scared when people walk by the tank. I was wanting something like reeds or rushes, but I dont know how deep they can be planted, the tank is approx 20" deep.
Thanks,
Dustin

Several plants available at pet stores are North American natives. These include hornwort, banana plant, cardinal flower, Bacopa caroliniana, green cabomba, most of the commonly available hairgrasses, some swords, Ludwigia repens, Najas guadelupensis, American and giant val, and so on.

Larger hairgrasses such as Eleocharis montevidensis sound close to what you want. Drifting masses of stem plants such as hornwort or L. repens make excellent cover for skittish fish.

There are lots more plants available from pond suppliers and, of course, local wetlands, but in both cases it can be hard to find the plants you want at this time of year.
