So I've got a friend who is an avid diver and has always wanted to do a native saltwater tank with the fish he sees when he is diving around Long Island. I've really only done freshwater tanks and I have very little advice to give him. I know he needs to pick small species but I can't seem to find much info for him on small species. He takes care of my tanks when I'm away so I want to help him out.

There are a number of killies, blennies, and gobies along the coast there that would make good aquarium inhabitants. Their care is pretty basic; room temp, FOWLR or even FO is fine, flake food and small live foods, etc. There a couple of native salt keepers on the NANFA site.

hope it works out. i've always wanted to have a huge native salt tank but i know it'll never happen

How big of a tank is he planning? I've done several native sw tanks. I've kept tiny gobies, killifish, bull minnows, grass shrimp, seabass, searobin, inshore lizardfish, northern puffers, and others I'm probably forgetting. A real cool monster is the oyster cracker. Or maybe a stargazer, just be careful cleaning the tank, or they'll shock ya! Anyway's, give us a tank size, and the type of areas he dives, and maybe we can make some reccomendations to you.

He said he dives around Long Island, just so you know.

He could catch some tropical strays during the summer.

This summer it was real warm and there were some Tropicals that got caught in the current that were up in Brooklyn. We saw some lion fish and even some butterfly fish. Another cool native is the sheepshead porgy

Just3542, I was referring to the habitat type. Knowing where he see's what he likes would help.
I've caught plenty of butterflyfish in OC, MD. I thought that lionfish were pacific, though.

They were introduced to the east coast following Hurricane Andrew. They're becoming prevalent in the southern coastal areas.

Oh, did not know that! Maybe I'll get a chance to cellect some this late summer/early fall. That would be allright, my sons getting old enough not to stick his hand in any tanks i tell him not to, so I can start keeping venemous or toothy fish again. It was funny, he got attacked by his bluegill. The first time scared him, the second time he laughed. This is during tank maintenance by the way, I don't encourage, or even allow, him to play with the fish.
