Im relativlely new to this hobby, i have kept fish before but never native fish. Im looking for some pointers on what to do to the water and the fish before putting them together for good. BTW im in the upstate of South Carolina in Greenville county. Thanks

cycle them for at least a week... buy a cheap fish and throw it in to test your water... there are also kits available in pet shop you can use to test the water quality... good luck!

Hi Tstephens! Most native fish are tolerant of a wide range of water parameters, so you shouldn't have to worry too much about pH, hardness, and so on. Just get the tank cycled, as Ricomambo said, and your fish will be happy.

Do you know yet what sort of fish you wish to keep? A 55 is suitable for small-to-medium sunfishes and most cyprinids, darters, madtoms, and killifish.

Natureserve's clickable watershed map will let you see what species occur near you.
