Today I was at my pearents beach house and I was turning over rocks with my nephew and I was alwaying finding these cool little fish some where bright green some where dark brow with white bands i think they are some type of benniles(spelling?) and some cool eel looking fish...... and a bunch of little shrimps I think it would be a cool little tank may even add a few crabs u never know.............. i think it will be in a 10 gal tank with a hob filter the main this is i have never owned a salt water tank ever! so i dont know how to do water changes and i dont live near the beach so id have to get like the salt from the pet store? and how would i mix the salt into the new water...... wat im saying is i have no experince with salt water and just teach me the basics of salt water like how to do water changes and all that.......

if you've never owned a SW tank before get a bigger one than 10 gallons

I started with a 12 gallon, when problems hit the fan, they hit it hard.

What you're going to need to do is set up a tank, don't use stuff from the beach as they may be contaminated. (if humans have set foot in it, it's probably contaminated) go to the pet store and get some sand and a box of saltwater aquarium salt. You're going to need a hydrometer to measure the salinity of the water. a HOB is fine. Just do your research.

Research is the most important part of this hobby, Research, Research, Research!

I suggest you start here:

Read as much as you can about the Marine topics, and good luck.

would like to see some pics of your find. I would love to live close to the ocean to do a tank from what is in that area, I would use sand, rocks, water from there and it would be great to not have to mix salt at all, only if it were legal of course

the only problem with native fish is........ um..... none. they can be gotten, just do it carefully. cops can't tell a captive bred fish from a local wild fish, and if you can get them from a "private" pond, go for it. my largemouth bass came from a fly fishing trip a year ago and just recently passed. i am considering an exotic though because bass and bream are too common. everybody sees them on the end of a fishing line and not in the water, which is why i kept them. i want to raise some exotics though and if they breed, you can sell the babies. if you like natives, go for it. a ten gallon is not enough for any real diversification though. you may get 1 or 2 fish in there. get a bigger tank and get more fish. have fun!

sup guys i was wondering what tank size would i need for 2..3 bream and also can you give me some info on saltwater filters that would be good for bream... and also Flathead

i have found out all the legal stuff and its fine its from a private beach it still would be legal if it wasnt...... the reason im doing a 10 gal is the fish im getting max out at around 5 inches and i would only get 2 or 3 of the fish if i end up really likeing them id go up to a 55 gallon and get more..... i have a chiller which im sure they are gona need since they live in very cold water havent taken the exact temp but id say around the high 40s lower 50s........ no skimmer needed?
