the dirty south
I've been keeping natives with tropicals for as long as I can remember. They will be fine as long as you consider their individual needs and compatibility. Right now I've got a bunch of longear sunfish, green sunfish, and huge striped shiners with a bunch of mixed cichlids. Everyone is fine.

We've kept blue gills and large mouth bass in with our peacock bass...yes the bluegills do get eaten, but then that's why we catch 'em. :)

Awesome that's great news when I get paid up try and pick up a nice large pbass for a good price I've had smaller ones before but they died on my really hoping if I get a big one it won't die that would suck to spend that much cash on one and loose it

People do it all the time.

FL, longnose, shortnose, and gator gars are all native, and they're commonly kept with tropicals. I have a spotted gar in my 220g with my dat, marbled pim, suncat, sleeper goby, and fire eel right now.
Channel cats and bullheads are also quite commonly mixed.

As long as they're native fish that are tolerant of warmwater it's fine. Lots of sunfish and bass fit the bill, gars, and especially catfish.

When you think about it, most of our tropical tanks don't consist of fish from the same general area anyway. Fish from various SA regions often get mixed with fish from various areas of Africa and Asia. I don't know many people that make sure to keep their fish from the same region or water source. What matters is that they're relatively compatible or able to adapt to your temperature and water parameters.

yeah all mine are able to tolerate warm water damn wish i would of known this before i sold all the fish i had in it before sold my aro flagtail all my catfish oh well too late now thanks again

I have a "clean up crew" of exotics in with my natives, including Bushynose Ancistris, Siamese Algae Eaters, and Dwarf Clawed Frogs, and may get some Cory Cats as well. In winter I like the tank get slightly cooler than normal, to give the natives a bit of a season, but not enough to hurt the tropicals.

It's hard not to mix fish, because I have not found good analogs for algae eating fish in our natives. Tried American Flagfish but they turned out to be mean, nasty little fin nippers.

It can be okay but keep in mind that natives have the potental to carry diseases and parasites that trpoicals do not have the natural resistance to and vise versa.

As long as you quarantine your fish before introduction and get rid of any diseases you shouldn't have a problem with most aquarium fish.

I'm picking up a 8" LMB tomorrow gonna put it in with my Pbass ill let you know how it goes. I know this is an old thread but I think it's a good thing for people to see it can be done
