Hey everyone,

I'm building a pond next year and I'm looking for places to buy/catch bowfin, freshwater drum and other natives within driving distance.
Any recommendations? Any reliable online places?

-Thanks
Mike

I don't think that bowfin or drum are native to the Philly area. At least I've never caught either, and they don't look native from the distribution maps I've seen.

Easy to catch natives near Philly include Sunfish (Green, Bluegill, Redbreast, Pumpkinseed), Rock Bass, Crappie, Bass, Trout, and Catfish. An hour or two drive will give you access to yellow and white perch. If you want specific suggestions on any of these, I would be happy to proved them.

Green lane reservoir has a very nice pumpkin seed strain. I caught a few during the spring/summer when they come up shallow close to the bank and build their nest. I kid you not, simply beatufil.

Nockamixon has a really good green sunfish strain that have a very bright orange/red on the tips of their pectoral and dorsal fins. These are bigger mouthed and more predacious sunfish.

Lastly, if you take a boat out on Marsh creek in downingtown, they have a really pretty bluegill strain where the males get a bright red belly and throat when breeding.

All are easy to catch on hook and line. Get 2lb test wiht a very small hook. Tie the hook directly to the line and give about 9 inches of tag line beneath the hook where you'll attach a drop shot weight of 1/16 ounce. Nose hook a small white power grub and drop shot close to shore under cover.

You'll catch a dozen in 2 minutes. no lie.

HOnestly, the little pumpkinseeds at Green Lane are the prettiest.

Interesting info...I'm in Philly and I've always wondered if there was anything else around besides the different sunfish that I've come across.
