I fish aa river and pull up wood off the bottom all the time. If I pulled up an interesting piece could I use it in a tank? Is there some sort of way I should process it first?

I've done this before. Found a couple nice pieces up in the Sierras last year brought them home and scrubbed them real well with a nylon bristle brush, then hot rinsed and then soaked them for a week in a big tub.

A good scrub or power wash, soak it to see if anything weird happens before tank test.I have also used small capful of bleach in the soaking, then you need to rinse well again, soak again with dechlorinator

I did exactly this ^^^

plus, i also sun-dried the wood in high heat for days

Great info, thanks for sharing. Never thought about testing it before putting it in.

Also you after you boil it (and it's dry) you can throw it in a trash can full of salt to help pull out any unwanted hitchhikers.
