Natural Sponge as a Filter Media for Rays?

I am making my own wet/dry filter for a ray tank and was wonder if anybody knows if I would be able to use natural sponge as the prefilter media. Would it break down over time or harm the fresh water rays in any way?

You should only use inert materials that will not decompose.

Besides breaking down, they have surprisingly low surface area for the bb.

It's in a 40gallon container. I was wondering if the sponge would be better.

It clogs to fast and then channel quite easily, since it is organic it will break down it time.

Best to use poly-fil or A/C filter material for a pre-filter or filter socks.
