Obviously my title is a bit of hyperbole. I'm not really concerned about this tank turning into beer.

My friend is looking to build a planted 20g, and they sell a C02 system at my LFS for like $40 that apparently actually grows yeast in it to produce C02. It was explained to me that you basically put yeast packets and normal white table sugar into the thing and that it diffuses the C02 into the tank. My friend is on an extremely limited budget, hence the appeal of such a system. I'm giving him about half the plants from my current planted 30g, a 20g tank, a nice little fancy pleco (named Pleco Burress, naturally) and a bunch of shrimp, snails, and guppies.

Has anybody ever used a system like this? Does it get messy? Cause it seems pretty gross to me when compared to a normal canister-based C02 system. And of course if you accidentally spilled it into your tank, I imagine it'd be disastrous.

Thoughts?

Look up DIY co2 for aquariums, it will cost less than 5 dollars. Basically a two liter bottle, a smaller bottle and yeast water and sugar. You should be able to find diagrams on google for it. Super super easy and it works great. Do nt get something for 45 dollars when you can make it yourself

I have mine in a small room, no smell or anything. And the second bottle is to prevent anything getting into your aquarium, look it up

Thanks! My friend used to be a carpenter and I bet he'll be down to do some DIY. I'll forward him this thread directly!
