Landon Evans, a 15-year-old from Benson, pulled a new record-setting blue catfish out of Lake Gaston on June 11 — the enormous fish weighed 117 pounds, 8 ounces.
The hefty catfish was 55 inches long and measured 40.5 inches in girth.
This is the third time in six months Lake Gaston has set the record for blue catfish, cacording to the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. In order to qualify for a state record, the fish must be caught by rod and reel or cane pole, must be weighed on a certified scale and must be identified by a commission biologist. The angler must have at least one witness and submit an application.
The previous record catfish weighed 105 pounds.
