My friend gave these to me. He said he snagged them from a local pond in his backyard but he didn't know what they were.

I hope you/your friend are aware of California laws on collecting fish (both native/nonnatives) which is illegal without a permit. There's lot of rare and endemic species in California.

But in this case, it looks like a tilapia fry to me....can easily mistaken for a rare tule perch or a sacramento perch.

So from now don't collect any fish, it will get you in trouble and California is worst state....

Yup, tilapai without a doubt. Hybrids most likely.
