My story is I have a 12" silver that i got for about 2 and a half weeks now. My problem is his previous owner has been feeding him only feeder fishes since he was 3" or so. Now he will only eat fishes and he is still afraid of me. I tried feeding him crickets and krill but he is scared to approach me, even after slowly approaching him everytime. He has not eaten a single krill and only a handful of crickets (I never saw him eat one, I would have to leave before he would come up) So when I feed him, I just leave the feeders with him (Something I don't like to do). Is there any way I gain his trust? How can I get him to eat new types of food, it looks like he's hooked on feeders.

as most ppl would say just stopp putting feeders in and eventually they switch to what ever u r tryin to feed it.....aros can last a while without food because they be having drout seasons were they dont eat alot or at all in the wild

Yeah, I tried doing that. I kept him hungry for 5 days but he just kept looking tough like he doesn't care whether I'm feeding him or not. Than I gave up because I felt sorry for him. Now the help I need is how to stop feeling soft for him. LOL

arowanas can survive w/o food for weeks just starve for 1~2 weeks

On here I've read a lot of people use crickets as the turn on for food after the starve, good luck

Don't give up and feel sorry for him. At that size they can go quite awhile without eating. Only feed it pellets until it eats, will most likely take a couple of weeks.

when i first got my arowana, it would never eat until i left the room and no1 was watching it. just leave the food in there and come back in 5min. if that doesnt work than try getting another fish the similar size. it'll push them to be more competitive for food. just dont get another arowana.

as far as it being scared of you, try leaving the lights off for a couple days. I did this for a while and would only turn them on to feed and mine now swims right in front of the lid begging for food
