I'm setting up a small tank (actually a 25-35 gallon Rubbermaid container) for experimenting with filter designs, etc. I need a small submersible pump for filtration.

Parameters:
- about 2ft max head (not including head loss via pipe wall friction)
- at least 150gph at 2ft
- not concerned with power consumption, but lower is better, obviously
- noise could be an issue, as this might be in my bedroom
- not looking to spend more than $30 if I don't have to

A few of the brands I've been looking at:
- Rio
- Quiet One
- Danner Mag Drive
- Hydor
- ViaAqua
- Azoo

At this point, I'm leaning towards the Mag Drives. I've read good things about them, and they are the only ones for which I have found pump performance curves/data. Not sure about the noise levels, though.

Any input/experience is appreciated.

Thanks.

I just baught a mag drive 1800 and I was also concerned about the noise. I even strapped a sponge to it (it is also submersed in a rubermaid - same thing your looking to do) the sponge was strapped on to prevent the noise. I was so surprised when I plug it in. I cant believe how quite it is, and thats an 1800, I assume the smaller ones must also make no noise.

Hope that helped.

Quiet one pumps are the best bang for the buck IMO.

Click on "more information" for the curves.

I know magdrive has a lot of followers, but apparently they havent tired quiet ones lol.
:iagree:

I had two mag7's and was tired of the noise and went with the quiet one 3000's and love it. Quiet as hell and does the job. Now I have 2 mag7's and deciding what to do with them. :irked:

Thanks to everyone for the input. I've decided to give one one of the ViaAqua's a go. Can't beat the price, and reviews are consistently good.

My old Quietone had restart issues, searched the web and found some similiar complains. I replaced it with a MagDrive.

What was the problem?

Once switched off, upon restart the pump would turn but no water movement. Solution, to switch on and off a few time, which most likely would solve the problem. But a few time I have to disconnect the hose and release the air bubbles, reconnect the hose then it worked.

since the pump was was submerged in sump, the disconnect/reconnect was a pain. besides, the heater were in the sump also, no water movement, no heating.
