Need advice about Bio-tower design...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
a piece of pipe.... 6" pvc.... or go with a bigger ads style pips 8-12"

you could out it in a 5 gallon buck and use some strapping to mount it to a wall.... i would pump to it and let gravity return it to the sump... johnptc has a nice bio tower and there are some others on here search arround the forum...

-depend on how much bio you need
-attach pvc or acrylic to top then drillhole same size as a slip union of the pipe size of the input/return pipe then glue in, epoxy paste in and add layer of silicone to ensure no leaks do the same thing on the bottom but instead drill on the pipe itself you can then just glue your pipes on both sides of this "joint"
-glue a square piece of pvc or acrylic shett on the bottom and it should stand you can also secure that to floor

is this for a pond or aquarium because if it is for aquarium i would suggest putting the filter bags in the sump where all water coming in has to pass through it keeping the rest of your equipment clean.

I should have listed more information.

THE DATA:
Indoor pond, 8 foot long / 5 foot wide / 2.5 foot high
Underwater pump to pump to 55 gal barrel filter, with a TEE at the top to split off a line and run to Bio-Tower.

Both filter and Bio-Tower will be fed water at their tops an then drain back down into pond.

What I need to know is , is there any need to clean a bioTower?
The reason i ask is that if I make a bio-Tower as suggested with the 6" or 8" sewer pipe and mount it to the wall I will have no way to clean it later.

Also, I was planning on the use of metal straps to strap the BioTower to the wall, is this a good idea?

Any photos of this or any other means to hold a 8" pipe in position?

Also, due to a lack of money here I was planning on the use of Pot Scrubbers as the media inside the BioTower...good idea ?

well as i said before, filtering(mechanical) before the biotower will keep it clean but if you dont have this, and run dirty water through it the media will shurely need to be washed (not often but it will get some buildup)
the metal strap is a great idea as long as the straps dont touch the water...(i mean they are fine if outside your tower)

Scrubbies are a great substitute and you can buy them by the case @ http://doitbest.com/Scouring+Pads-Do+it+Best+Imports-model-10044-doitbest-sku-632989.dib
Don't over pack them.

Plumbers strapping will work use as many as needed for the height (every 2ft in height). Support the bottom.

You can use PVC end caps for the top and bottom and a flange fitting for the base.

Drill the PVC pipe for the fittings and cement them in.

Place a valve on the outlet of your drawing and install an outlet 3"-4" above the bottom. this will allow detritus and muck to settle and be cleaned out by opening the valve (even with a 10 micron bag).

To clean the bio-material just take the filter off line and reverse the flow (use tank water to clean).

If your running water directly from the tank to it, the bag will get dirty fast.

Add an air stone to increase to aeration to the bio-material and increase DO level.
