I’ve been throwing around the idea of getting a 240 gallon tank and housing a single dovii male in it. Curious if you guys think that would be more rewarding than having a community of smaller cichlids in there, Texas cichlids, Jaguar, red devil, etc.

It’s a preference thing really but I will say I am switching over from community to single/pairs and I like it better and think it’s more rewarding

Depends on what you want from your tank. Do you like a lot of variety and watching fish interact with each other? Or would you prefer a single impressive fish that just interacts with you (a "wet pet")?

I like both so I have tanks everywhere. It's fascinating to watch fish interact, form friends and enemies and have their own community.

There's also a lot to be said for a big lunker wet pet who is glad to see you--or outraged to see you, depending on its attitude--that you can form a one-on-one relationship with.

Only you can decide which set up you prefer, you need to remember that it will take a juvi dovii years before it turns into a fearless glass banger. Imo if you only have one tank then a community is a better option, if you have multiple tanks then a solo wet pet. If you have the room then why not get two 150 gals, one community and one wet pet tank, lots of wet pets that can fit in a 150.

I have a 40 gallon breeder, 75 gallon, and now I want to add a big tank, I can possibly do (2) 150’s. If I went that route I would possibly do 1 male Jag. They seem to be hit and miss though, what do you think the AVERAGE male Jag attains size wise, I know there are some monsters out there.

I would say for the community tank go SA. Easier to get them to mesh than most centrals, and you want the community to be as problem-free as possible. Geophagus, guianacara, perhaps some of the less aggressive crenicichla, some oddballs like a prochilodus. Would be a cool show tank.

Then the CA tank I would do your "wet pet". Maybe a haitensis would be my choice.

Can you make some suggestions about stocking a community 150 with either CA/SA?

I believe a 240 is a bit small for an adult dovii, and in that size tank, and because of the limited amount of space it has to move (2 ft extra either size of its average length, if hovering mid tank) it will sit in one area and sulk, except maybe feeding time.
So not the most satisfying tank to watch, once the novelty of its size wears off.
Unless you are willing to spend lots of hours amusing it with toys, like you might a 2 year old human.
