At my job they have what I believe is at the least a 250 gallon hexagon tank. Ph is at 7.8 ammonia and nitrite are at zero but the nitrates are off the charts....
In the tank is a large colony of yellow labs and a smal bn pleco. I've been taking out at least 3 death fish every week. I know it's def the high nitrates and I brought it to their attention. They pay the lfs to maintain the tank and they do monthly water changes. When they do the water changes Ive tried to advise them to do larger water changes and they seem not to like to be told how to do their job. So....I ask my supervisor to let me care for the tank and she said she would even pay me what she pays them to maintain the tank.....now my dilemma is that I don't know how long those fish have been living under those conditions and I'm afraid to make ONE large water change and have them die of shock. Should I do small daily water changes until the nitrates are low? Should I treat with prime and a large water change? ...what should I do?...lol....I'll take all the help you can give!
:edit: forgot to mention the filtration, they have a 40 gallon wet dry and a uv sterilizer
