I bought a 20 gallon for my niece last night. This tank will be at my house, but the fish will be hers.

I would like some advice as to what kind of fish I should get. I already have danios and mollies. I like some of the barbs, but am not sure how big they will get. She also likes red phantom tetras and kissing gourmis. I would like something that is not really agressive, can stay in the 20 gallon for at least 6 months, can live with a cory and pleco and is pretty hardy. Any suggestions? Her mother has a tank with guppies at her house, so I don't want to get those.

Get a pair of oscars........................ Just kidding, they would get to big.
Try some clown loaches, they grow slow and if you have enough they school and swim all around. They tend to get ich easily though, so be gentle.

if you like the barbs, how about 5 or so golden or cherrys. Ultimately I would perhaps have a pair of Kissers, group of golden barbs and group of red phantoms- sorted. GL

That grouping sounds like a plan. I like the golden and she likes the phantoms. A pair of the kissing would be a very nice addition. Will a cory and pleco do well with these?

go with a snake head ....
Not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Kissing gourami's and clown loaches IMO require much bigger tanks to thrive.
Pick a selection of small schoolers and colourful, small tetras.

Have you thought of the other species that definitely fit? Clown loaches are not an option here.;) The only species that will fit IMO are Pangios and Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki.

Snakeheads and kissing gouramis, as Mystix had explained, are not an option here either.

Tetras, rasboras, danios, cories, small plecos, guppies, bettas, dwarf species of gouramis, rams, apistos, pencilfish, hatchetfish, Jordanella floridae (for something unique though not for community tanks) and killifish are your options here. Pretty simple. If you want monsters, then Exodon paradoxus would be your choice here.

Try getting some cardinal tetras, maybe.
