Dear Monster fish keepers,

Currently i have a 4x2x2 tank, almost 75 gallon. I have 6 tin foil barbs, 8 silver dollar, 5 parrot fish, 6 Bala sharks, 1 black ghost knife fish, 2 common plecos.

I am planning to make an 8 feet lenth, 2 feet wide, 4 feet height tank, almost 400 gallon in my bedroom. Planning to have Arowana in that. Can I put silver dollars, tin foil barbs, Bala sharks, parrot fish, black ghost knife fish to this tank along with arowana. Please share your suggestions. Will they live peacefully.

If it is a Silver Arowana I suggest making the dimensions 8×4×3 and 10 ×4×3 would be even better. Arowana's grow fast so you would have to monitor the tankmates size accordingly. I think it would work but you didn't mention how many of each species.

Depend on what's species of arowana you want to keep and your tank is already over stocked without the Arowana :) get rip of those tinfoil barb cause they get huge and will out compete everyone at feeding time, plecos are pooping machine and those do get huge and just bad for your tank water quality. Also, change the tank height to 24~30 inches and 4 foots wide is much better or 8x3x3.
*Tinfoil barb are fast moving fish, and Arowana is kinda mellow swimmer. They are easy to get spook with fast movement so you would get higher change tinfoil barb will sent your arowana face rip at the tank wall or tank cover.

Thanks tlindsey and Yuki Rihwa, I am sorry, I am unable to increase the wide of the tank. It must be 2 feet wide. Because I have 8 feet empty space from my bed. In that I have planned 2 feet wide for tank and 6 feet for bean bags and sofas to enjoy watching the fish. Also i am from India, if I could get one redtail golden Arowana for good price, planning to add it to my 8feet length x 4 feet height x 2 feet wide tank. And I am planning to build it in concrete with front and side viewing panels.

No worries, no need to sorry :) it's all good, it's just some suggestions. Your future tank already better than a lot of members here.

Most likely, you should plan your tank mates accordingly to your arowana. I've never kept one, but I am looking at doing so in the future. Would you be interested in re-stocking when you're done building your new tank? That way, you can get your arowana and a whole new stock of tank mates that will benefit both themselves as well as the arowana. You won't want anything boisterous, like Yuki Rihwa Yuki Rihwa said; I have a boisterous catfish who kind of gets in the way of my other, more mellow fish; I'm considering replacing him when I upgrade.

Best of luck. Also, a friendly comment, you might want to have an engineer or architect to look over your plans in advance . In just water alone, your tank will wiegh over 4000 pounds. With the glass and concrete it could easily be 7000. That is like having two Honda accords parked in your bedroom. You want to make sure your house can handle the load.

Hi, was just browsing through this thread.
Awesome to read that you are in India and going after a nice gold Asian Arowana.
Because of the expense of the Asian Arowana I would make him the center piece of the aquarium and add a few fish that will compliment him.
I would remove the tinfoil barbs because they can be a nuisance and be nippy, the bala sharks because they can get almost arowana size, the parrots may be a little aggressive for your arowana since they are a mixture of 2 different cichlids with one of them being a aggressive cichlid species. I don't see any issue with the BGK, since they mostly hide. But keep in mind, eventually he will get 16'' but that will take a while.
You could consider a peaceful cichlid such as a small group of Geophagus (Sveni, Red Head Tapajos, Winemilleri are some good examples of fish that should compliment your aro), maybe a few nice platnium angelfish, some redhook silverdollars, or fish with color that will reflect your asian aro.
Just my opinion, hope it helps.
