My wife Brandie wants to setup another leopard gecko enclosure. She has owned them in the past (few years ago). So shes asking me to ask the MFK community for help. She has her old terrarium 20"L x 12" W x 12"H, but gave away all her equipment to a friend. What would she need to keep a leopard gecko for life? Terrarium can/will be upgraded as needed.

All and any help would be greatly appreciated.

-heat light
-UVA/UVB light
-playsand
-slate tiles to make a hide and basking platform
-some driftwood for decor

Ok cool, so looks like we have pretty much everything except the heat lamp and UVA/UVB bulb.

Is just one of each good enough for a enclosure that size? Also by "play sand", I assume almost any fine grain sand should be ok right? It will be rinsed and cleaned before we add it in obviously.

You do not need a UVA/UVB bulb for leopard geckos because naturally they are a nocturnal species (one of the things that make them so easy) and you will also want to have a supplement powder to dust crickets mealworms or whatever you are feeding.

And I would suggest you do not use sand at all. Especially when they are younger because they can consume it and have compaction problems that can result in death. I would suggest all tile, or a reptile carpet. I use paper towel very easy to clean and great for the Leo's

Thanks BigFinn thats very helpful. What do you suggest as a base diet? Or is it best to rotate between food items or give a bit of each at the same time? I ask because I assume ill end up doing most of the feeding and cleaning myself becuase of my history with aquariums, plus my wife handles most the yuky baby stuff lol

I always kept a little dish of calcium powder in with mine 24-7. A mix of meal worms and crickets is a good diet for a Leo.

Yes it is good to keep in there for them to access when they wish. And as stated above and in the care sheet mealworms and crickets are the best. The occasional waxworm or superworm can be given as a treat.

impaction with playsand is largely a myth. IF a gecko gets inpacted it is not due to the sand, it is due to another problem such as dehydration. Repticarpet is a terrible choice, along with being a breeding ground for bacteria, it also has a tendency to trap and cut off toes. leos appreciate the oppurtunity to dig, and i believe it should be given to them. I have never heard of a healthy leo getting impacted on playsand.
