Hello guys and gals, I have finally set up a 90 gallon for SA/CA cichids.

This is what i have so far:

1 red oscar
2 green sevs
1 firemouth

I was going to stop with this, but today i saw a beautiful convict at my lfs. he will be about an inch larger than my new fish. i have never owned a convict, but hear that they are highly aggressive and may try to breed with other fish (i thinking the sevs?) causing very high levels of aggression.

My question is, should i get the convict (I believe it is a male) or should i just forget that idea and stick with what i know? id love to add one more fish and hes so handsome but i dont want him if he will beat up my oscar or firemouth (the firemouth is the smallest right now..)

Thanks so much for the help! Mel

Convicts... Very cool fish but total little bastards. I tried to have a red point which is like a Convict, and thought I could get him super tiny small but he grew so fast and he became a jerk... If you're Sevs, and Oscar are large they mite work but the Firmouth may be in trouble... My Sev was bigger but still got picked at.. 90 gal is very cool though!!

i have three sevs in my 75 a gold , a red spot , and a green i love them i vote nay on the con awsome lil fish but a lil rough for sevs get a 20 long and breed them

im worried because the sev is actually bigger than all the other fish by about an inch or inch and a half-he may start with an upper hand.

thanks for the advice orbit!

I've kept a female con with a female sev, they only messed with each other when either laid eggs. I've seen my con shredded and harrassed by my sev and vice versa maybe once, twice max. Never anything that couldn't be healed back. And nothing that looked life threatening.

This was all in a 55g they lived together for about 5 years.

Anytime!! Sevs usually aren't bad attitude fish but I tried two of them and it didn't work. Fighting between the two all of the time. When you set the new tank up put in the weakest fish you have first. Let him get settled then move to the next and so on. Works for me...

thanks for the help all three of you! i have added the fish (oscar, 2 sevs and 1 firemouth) to the 90 gallon-they are eating and looking good.

i dont think ill get the con-mainly because its larger than the others (and is about 2 inches larger than the firemouth) and i believe its a male. if one of my sevs are female im betting the con will go nutz when he sexually matures.

thanks for the help everyone! Mel

Glad to. I really didn't give an answer to your question though heh Thought my experience would help. I really don't know if i'd add that stocks sounds good as is, well maybe something that gets max 5" heh Rainbow cichlid maybe?

Sounds like you are pretty solid to avoid the Convict which I would like to reiterate that you made the right decision.

Cons have the Napoleon complex. Although they are entertaining, you have to keep an eye on them because they wil TRY to take over which usually ends with dead fish or jacked up fins.

I use them as dithers and for feeders.

I have a breeding pair of cons in my 150 and its not a problem the cons are nasty but there is plenty of room. when they were in my 44 some fish got hurt. none died but one of my severums lost an eye. they are nasty fish
