Shark aquarium has Red Reticulatus Rays for sale, I am not finding much info on the net about them. How big do they get (would they fit for life in a 180?) how hardy are they? Also wondering if sand or bare bottom is mandatory? I have the coated Estes gravel and it's pretty smooth. Any advice would be great!

I have found these to be one of the more common rays in my area, usually about 50 bucks (Cheap as far as rays go). Naturally they have really long tails, but the ones I have seen are usually very skinny and lose the end of the tail by the time they reach the store from fungal infections. My understanding is that they reach about 12 inch diameter. I have a male I bought very small. He is very active and seems very hearty. I have him in a bare bottom.

I currently am keeping three of these little guys. They have not reached sexual maturity yet but they are well on their way. I have heard mixed reports but from what I hear from experts is that they usually reach about 16 inches across and in some cases 18. It's not common to see one this size. Keep up on your water changes and the bigger the surface area the better. I have them in a grow out tank and will be moving them into a secondary grow out pond. It's 4ft long, 2 ft wide and 1 ft tall.
Hope this helps!

google.com is a great website...

red retics are said to be smaller than regular retics .... as for when you first bring them home bare bottom is best, helps keep the water cleaner you can actually see what the rays are eating etc.... just makes life easy for awhile and simple is best... after that and smooth sand or gravel would be fine.... as for a 180 for life im not 100% but you would get more than 5 years out of it...

dont forget the tail nic, with the tail it could easily be 30" plus.

but from what ive been told the true red retics max out 12-14" disk and are usually 20" - 24" long that case a 180 be tight but do able a 30" wide tank is always better but with any retic a 180 will cover you basically 5 years...

Thats true, but true red retics are pretty rare now, but either way, yea 180 would last for 5 years definitely.

even if they do only grow to 12-14 inch don't under estimate that size of ray its still big
