I was wondering if anyone has ever tried this and if worked for you or not. I was planning in order to save money on an expensive piece of 1/2" glass for the bottom using like 1/4" instead and backing it with 3/4" plywood. This would then allow me to make my own solid wood tank frame for the bottom of my tank and attach it to the plywood . this is a little diagram I drew up of what I'm thinking of doing.

Also if this would work what can I use to attach the bottom glass to the plywood, would silicone adhere to plywood?? and can I just spread it on there like spackle? also my frame would be 2" tall so that it can help support the seams of the tank.

Let me know what you guys think this would save me on the cost of the glass and the tank frame.

I know its early morning but anybody, some info would be greatly appreciated before I start buying materials for this.

hey that is my idea well almost, i did not glue the glass to the plywood i got some pink styrofoam insul and put it between the glass and the ply. works great and spreads the weight evenly.

?????any input is appreciated????? I would hate to do this and have the bottom break and have to replace it yet again. how is your tank holding up oscarluvr.

Basically... Not going to work out to well IMO, The problem I see is basically that your 1/4 glass will not be sitting completely flat as there are imperfections in the plywood and with the "glue" that you want to put in it won't have even pressure as well so the glass would have to much pressure on it in some spots because of less support underneath and the 1/4" thickness just won't be able to hold and will crack .. then break. This is something which CAN be done... but it is a process which rarely works for amatures. your better off just shopping around and getting replacement glass of the same size or greater
