Need advice on setting up a tank

hey guys im fairly new to the site but i am really new to salt water set up seems i find a lot more salt water fish for sale around here, i was wondering what i need to start and all the testing i would need to do anyone able to help the tank will be a small tank to test out see if i can do it. i was wondering what i would need im not looking to do this all the time but im just trying to learn to do it right, i have been doing research i know ill need a heater powerhead anda few other things but could someone write me a list im only looking to do a 10gallon tank for the time being and having a couple fish and maybe a little reef nothing big can anyone help me out.

what do u suggest i start with then? i have an empty ten gallon two thirtys with cichlids in them and a 80 that houses a silver arowanna.
 
RyanP ya i got my hands full but hey when you got nothing better to do its okay :P i mean i would love to work in my LFS but they have a **** selection lol and thank mr.reef24 that will be really helpful and im debating putting it in a 30gallon which i have already just needs to be cleaned up. and building my indoor pond for 2 of my tiger oscars and maybe big enough for anything else.
 
a 30 gallon would be a great size to start with not too small but not enormous either
