my niTRITE jumped from 0 to .25 and now im kinda scared for my fish. what can i do to fix this asap? some one sugguest to do a water change, but i understand if my niTRATE jumped i would change the water but how is changing water drop my niTRITE? i was changing my water every other day. i have a 125 gal change 20% water every other day and i think i killed some of my bio load and cause my nitrite to jump. would doing another water change fix this?

is there a faster way to cycle the tank other than letting it sit?

Do a water change. If there is something in the water that you don't want, changing it with clean water will remove it, it doesn't matter if it's ammonia, nitrite, or nitrates. Ensure you are using dechlorinated water so you don't damage your biofilter. You can also dose with Prime to reduce the toxicity of the nitrites. This will take care of the high nitrites so it doesn't harm your fish, but that is just a symptom. The actual root of the problem is, something happened to disrupt your cycle. Possible causes are:

Using water with chlorine/chloramine and destroying some of your bacteria when you do water changes.

Inadequate bio-filtration.

Your water could have high nitrites right out of the tap.
