Need some advice from everyone here, just getting back in the hobby after taking 5 years off. I am going to be purchasing a 90 gal this weekend and want to stock it with some cichlids. Been reading up on the forums trying to get some ideas of what direction I want to go in.

First I would like to get at least a few fish (5-10) instead of just one or two big ones. I will not be upgrading my tank to anything bigger so I don't want anything that will get too big and suffer because of it. I was thinking of starting off with convicts (not to breed, will request all the same sex) and then go from there. I would also like to keep some sort of catfish if possible, and maybe an eel (or something that looks like one) if they will be compatible with my cichlids.

I plan on putting in two flower pots, rocks, driftwood, and a few live plants to provide some hiding spots for my fish.

I'm open to all suggestions, you all know more than me. I trust your advice over the pet stores you never know what you will get from them.

If you'd like some really cool hard to find fish I would go with some grammodes or salvini along with the convicts they should hold there own.

A couple male convicts (I'd rather have honduran red points), female salvini (maybe substitute rainbows if you used hrp), a severum (gets pretty big, but it would help keep order and would use the higher region of the tank at least some of the time).

Alternative: Skip the convicts, use angels up high, rams and apistos down low, maybe throw in an electric blue demspsey, and plant the tank pretty heavily. One of the problems with a 90 versus a 75 is that it is taller, and cichlids tend not to use or need the extra height.

I'd go with a mixed SA/CA community of smaller peaceful fishes, like rainbow cichlids, acaras, Thorichthys, and a robust geo like red hump

id put a butterfly fish in there too , their pretty kool to look at and they stay on the top mainly so youll have some entertainment on the top of your tank. and some blue grammas( sorry if i misspelled that) i love how they put their lil feeler fins out on the tank when you touch the tank .

While I like CA\SA cichlids myself there are a lot of colorful african cichlids that would fit nicely in a 90 gallon (since you want up to 10 fish).
