i was told by a local fish store that you she was having problems with her angelfish breeder because he used a water softener. she said that she uses treated city water in her tanks, and she couldn't acclimate the angels to be kept in treated city water. i was thinking of breeding angels but i have well water and i too use a water softening system.i know angels are very delicate but i keep several different species of fish as i suffer from MTS as most of us do, but i never really looked into anything with water softener systems. to be honest i forget the thing is even there. now when i look into people are saying all sorts of stuff about them not being safe for fish? ive never had a problem. any advice or anyone know more about this. i dont want to invest in any more breeding setups or fish if they are just gonna die at the petstore. cuz without a buyer its not worth it.

I use a household water softener, have not had much trouble . . . is yours the kind that uses salt? the main concern with that kind is that too much sodium is in the water, which may be harmful to FW fish, especially sensitive ones

I get around this by using potassium salt, but in the past I have used regular salt pellets with no serious negative effects

that being said, Angles - - or Discus, another example - - might be more sensitive to higher levels of sodium

well what she is saying is that he bred and raised them in water that used a conditioner and when she transferred them to her store which is treated city water and she had multiple fatalities. so she doesnt want to buy any fish that are raised in well water with a water softener system. i use water straight from the tap for all of my tanks. i have a water softener system and yes it does use salt pellets. and a uv sterilizer on my main water line into my house. ive never had a problem im just trying to find out if there is factual basis of what she says. i think the guy sold her a bunch of diseased inbred angels tbh and she is just coming up with a nicer excuse not to buy his fish.

I have heard things before about water softeners causing problems, but the complaints were always vague and didn't explain much. So I would also like to know if anyone has any info about this.
