I have some hillstream loaches that only eat algae. Problem is that I can't seem to grow any fast enough to keep up with the demand and I'm unsure where to go to collect it naturally. I'll have a 50g set up outside for an algae farm soon, but I need to hold my fish over until it starts producing.

My best lead is borrowing some rocks from a family friend's pond, but can anyone else give me suggestions on other places that I can collect it? My loaches are in need of green types of algae, preferably on rocks or other solid surfaces.

I'd feed them prepared foods, but they aren't biting. :(

(Not sure where to post this, so sorry if this is the wrong place)

you could try some Soft Spirulina pellets. have you tried just giving them veggies? I know oto's usually enjoy zucchini, spinach, and broccoli- and they eat a lot of algae.
not a lot of ideas on collecting it, I remember seeing chunks floating in a local lake. I get large amounts growing in my tanks if I don't rinse off my frozen brine shrimp. mostly beard and hair.

I'd also read around the site on pellet training, though not all fish will make the switch.

You can try feeding algae wafers.

Come on over my house I have plenty you can have free of charge, I'd actually be happy to donate:)

put a couple rocks in a bowl with tank water on a window sill that gets a lot of sun. rotate the rocks when algae starts producing. good luck.
